Pig Attack!

Let’s face it, most people living in cities rarely think of pigs at all. Or if they do, they do so mostly in terms of walking bacon, or cute, funny, pink Mr. Piggy they saw in a cartoon once. The truth can be quite a bit different, as anyone who has grown up on a farm can tell you.

In truth pigs are powerful omnivores, which can weigh up to several hundred ponds and are armed with 44 very sharp teeth, so an angry, fully grown pig wouldn’t have too much of a problem tackling a human. If you add to that the fact that pigs are highly intelligent animals which live in social groups and are often mistreated by their human owners, it should come as no surprise that every year there are many fatal pig attacks. Some sources claim that over 20,000 people in the US alone are killed by pigs each year. In comparison, less than ten Americans are killed by sharks each year. Talk about the terror of the seas, right?

Most fatal pig attacks occur while the pigs are being taken for slaughter, and as sad as it is that our fellow humans get mauled to death, you can not blame an animal for not going quietly to its own death. Other attacks include, most commonly sows defending their piglets, as well as wild boars which can be quite aggressive and territorial towards humans. Still, over 70% of attacks come from domestic pigs, which is no surprise really, firstly because with the extensive pig farming all over the world, people are much more likely to come in contact with a domestic pig, rather than with a while boar, and secondly, because domesticated pigs are a lot more likely to have unresolved issues to settle with humans than wild ones are.

So if you decide to pay a pig farm a visit, be careful and respectful and never forget that a pig weighs several times more than you do, and has about 50% more teeth, so it is not to be trifled with.
